“Welcome to the beautiful island of Mahé in Seychelles! I’m your host, Tom Peters, and you,” says the man in front of us, spreading his arms out wide, “are the handpicked contestants for the premiere season of Date, Mate, Fate: Celebrity Edition.” He pauses for inserted applause. No, really—a crewman standing off-camera holds up a sign that says, “Insert Applause.”
When the clapping has met the appropriate meter level, Tom continues. “Several faces here, I’m sure you’ll recognize; celebrities from an array of arenas, including sports, the big screen, and even the Olympics have been generous enough to take time from their grueling schedules to join us. And each of them was asked to invite a plus one—anyone—of their choosing, whom we also thank for being here.”
I already feel cramped in my own skin, the endless barrage of cameras and crew filming our every move and reaction in full, intimidating effect. And to top it all off, I’ve just been declared a second-class citizen. Bonus.
I don’t join in on the clapping and whistling; the others’ enthusiasm is far from what I’m feeling. Instead, I burrow deeper into Oakley’s side, shielding my face behind his burly arm and clamping down tighter on his hand. I’m so far removed from my comfort zone, consisting of community college and a job at an off-the-beaten-path truck stop in a Podunk town. But it appears I’ve also landed in a certain circle of hell I’m having trouble comprehending—despite the generous one-week notice.

Matched is probably one of the most entertaining reads for me so far this year. I was completely drawn in from the beginning with my first thought being, “What the hell? That’s her guy?”
Our heroine, Harlow, is brought to this island reality show about finding your soul-mate by her boyfriend, Oakley. They have been on and off since high school, with a lot of “off” due t his professional football career. I gotta say, after the first interaction between these two my gut reaction was very Lost In Space; “Danger Will Robinson! Danger!”
Other than the excerpt and teasers here, there is so little about this book I want share – no quotes for sure – because I don’t want to give anything away. I am not even going to try to hint at my favorite parts, you’re just gonna have to read the book dangit. All I trust myself to do is explain how I felt through the book. OK, here we go.
Throughout the whole book I was like, “Phft, I know what’s going to happen.” I’m not gonna lie, you kinda do. Emphasis on kinda. Honey, you and I read enough books that we know he general idea of a lot of books. And if you have read any of the Games series from Jessica Clare you probably have an even better idea of this book. So, if you want crazy different, never before though of, heart-stopping twists and turns, this may not be the book for you.
However, pay close attention now, if you can just accept that you have the general idea of the destination, the journey is totally worth taking. You are going to love characters, hate characters, see yourself in characters, guess right, guess wrong; you get the whole nine yards in this book. Ok, now, the really important part:
This book kept me wanting more, and I know it will do the same for you. I could not put it down. Because even if I had guessed correctly all of the time – I didn’t and neither will you – I had to see what happened next. There are definitely twists and turns you won’t see coming, and I promise, you will not be bored. Ever.
So, let’s tie this up with a bow, k? 4 cups goes to this new release.
S. E. Hall and Angela Graham give a great story with characters you connect with on a number of levels. If I watched reality TV I would want a show with this much emotion.
