Resurrection of Aubry_Simmons_finalebooksm

Death.

For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.

For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.

As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.

Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…

But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.

Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?

Will they be enough to finally bring about…

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller?

My Review

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller is one of my all-time favorite books. Ever. Ever-ever. This story of a young woman finding her way out of the darkness has never been told so well.

Aubrey believes that very existence brings death to those close to her. To protect those around her, Aubrey creates the alter-ego Raven; a detached unapproachable, sharp-tongued hot mess.

Through four years of college she befriends two amazing equally broken people. Their bond proves that true love, whether friendship or romantic, is a powerful force.

When I offered to re-read this book for review I was excited. I wanted EVERYONE to know about it so they could fall in love with Aubrey, Kaeleb, and Quinn just like I had. I am not usually a re-reader, I don’t know why, it just never seems to work out. I get bored, knowing what’s coming. But I told myself, “Self, you can do this. You need to experience this again to fully explain why every-fucking-body needs to read this book.” So I did it.

I was SO unprepared. Did you know that if you understand the foundation being laid before you it is even MORE gut-wrenching the second time? I do now. I was in tears by chapter two. I was asking the author for tissues and whiskey by chapter eight. But I have to say, it was worth it. No worries, this is not the reaction the first time you read about Aubrey.

What does happen the first time you ask? Well, you heart breaks. A lot. And you fall in love. And you swear to read every book by Ms. Simmons. So grab your tissues and drink of choice. Lock the door and get ready. There is so much to look forward to:

Aubrey: The growth in character will inspire you. The turmoil she goes through will tear you apart.

“Because death annihilates love. And I am death. I’m not meant to love. It’s a proven fact, Doc.”

Quinn: The best friend. And oh what a friend. Even through her own problems she wanted to lift Aubrey up. Her own trials and triumphs will make you ashamed for every time you judged someone.

“Beautiful people tend to be ugly, ugly people tend to be beautiful, storms tend to brew below a person’s cool, calm exterior, and tremendously happy people tend to be overcompensating for their own grief. Nothing is ever what it really seems.”

Kaeleb: The hero of all heroes. So loving, so vulnerable, so much of everything you want for Aubrey. The guy that does the right thing, not the easy thing.

“You’ve always been my sunshine. Ever since we were kids…I know you’re still in there, Bree. And I will find you.”

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller is an amazing work of art and should make L. B. Simmons a household name. It makes my cup runneth over.
And it’s on SALE!!!!!!!!

If it weren’t for her best friends, Zoey and Maya, Addy Hart would be a prudish, uptight Barbie doll. Thankfully, through love and persistence, they’ve helped introduce her to her wild side. Unfortunately, even her wild side doesn’t have the courage to go after the one thing she wants more than life itself.

Dr. Greyson McDaniel has resisted his lovely teaching assistant for three years, now. He has no intentions of endangering his job or her reputation. But as spring break approaches, he’s seized with a wicked impulse. He invites her to his mountain retreat for a week. Just one week of intense escape.

What they both discover after their affair is that a week isn’t nearly enough. But as much as they long to be together, there are obstacles in their way, and the ethics of student-teacher relationships are the least of their problems. When she realizes how deeply rooted Grey’s commitment issues are, Addy begins to despair of ever having a happy ending with him. But Addy’s love might be just what’s needed to free him of his past.

excerpt

When they got home, it was nearly ten o’clock. She went to her room and changed into one of the sexy nighties she’d bought. It was pale pink, halter style, lace and chiffon, with a matching thong. She wasn’t sure if he expected her to wear things like this or not, but she wanted to do it. She hoped he would like it.
She found him sitting at the kitchen table, still dressed, his glasses on, frowning at his laptop. Probably grading essays or checking the student forums. She stood watching him until he looked up. He stared, mouth open, for what seemed like forever. Then he grinned, slammed the laptop shut, and came toward her.
“Beautiful, kiddo.”
“I’m not a kid.”
“No, you most definitely are not.” He rested his hands on her shoulders looked her up and down, raking her with his heated gaze. “Maybe a little,” he said. “Just in here.” He trailed his fingertip along the corner of her eye.
“I’m not,” she replied, going for assertive but not quite pulling it off.
“You’re brand new. Someone who just finished being a kid, now playing at being a grown woman. You’re composed, Addison, but be honest. There’s a little bit of rebellion going on here, isn’t there?” He moved toward her so that her breasts were touching his chest through the crisp, white shirt he had on.
“I have no authority to rebel against,” she answered, as she slid her hands flat up his abs and chest. “I’m an adult.”
“Mm. If you’re not rebelling, then you’re playing a game. That’s what this is, isn’t it? You saw some soap opera about a student running off with her professor, and now you’re re-enacting the drama?”
She frowned, meeting his eyes, now. He was smiling as though this was all a joke, but she caught the insecurity, just around the edges of his expression. “Are you afraid?” she asked.
A laugh. “Afraid of what?”
There was no answer to this that she could think of. She took a step back and answered his other question, instead. “I’m not playing a game, Grey. But I am having a first time. My first time with a man. My first time with you. This is my first time wearing something sexy for a man.” She looked down and fingered the lace edge of her baby doll gown. When she managed to glance back up, she saw that she had his attention, or rather her legs had his attention. Suppressing a grin, she said, “Don’t you like it?” She spun, slowly, glancing over her shoulder at him. This was a thrilling element of their relationship. It hadn’t occurred to her what a feeling of power she’d get from his lust.
“I like it.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

La Metropolian Hotel

Paris, France

Indiana Gaffney gasped, her eyes flying open and locking on the glistening object across the hotel room. It reflected the muted television behind her, the French Open final, the red of the court, blurry in the polished silver. A large, round plate, innocuous to the untrained eye, with the sizeable laser carved logo of Roland Garros at the center, was braced against the mirror hanging on the hotel room wall. The mirror reflected the match clearly, the broad steps and fierce rallies of two men battling it out for the French Open Men’s title. But those men were mere afterthoughts as her eye caught a set of shoulders stretching the material of his t-shirt thin, not a mere image from the television, but broad and warm and real. Strong hands slid down her back, fingers twining into the ends of her long blonde hair, tugging on it gently, drawing her gaze away from the mirror and back to the green eyes of the man in her bed.

He kissed her soundly, sending shivers down her spine and making her hips rock against his and her legs tighten around his waist. “It’s not gonna disappear if you take your eyes off it,” Jack Harrison muttered into the skin of her neck, nipping at it lightly with his teeth.

“Feels like it will,” she whispered back, tilting her head to give him better access. Most of her mind was focused on what he was doing with his hands and mouth, but that plate, the one that declared in no uncertain terms that she was the new French Open junior champion, would not be ignored. Not even for the guy who made her heart pound like no one else ever had before, the guy who, up until a few days ago, could barely look at her without his shoulders slumping with guilt. Their age gap hadn’t shrunk in the days full of soft kisses and nights far more intense — though perhaps not as intense as she’d like — but he wasn’t fighting their attraction anymore. She hadn’t chased him, not really, but he’d known she wanted him, almost from the moment they first met. Then he’d found out how old she was and he started treating her like a flashing red SEVENTEEN was stamped across her forehead, every year between them creating an accompanying foot of distance. In the end, the attraction had been too much, even for someone as painfully good as Jack Harrison.

“Hey, Champ, you in there?” Jack’s voice brought her back, his lips spelling out the words against her shoulder.

“Champ?” Indy hummed and smiled. “I like the sound of that.” In fact, she liked the sound of it so much she planned on winning again the next chance she got, on the grass courts at Wimbledon.

“I bet you do. Get used to it, baby,” Jack said, his whole face lighting up as he shifted his weight forward, tilting her back onto the bed. A shriek bubbled up through her throat and the giggles followed as he leaned over her, bracing himself on his elbows and then smothering her laughter with the press of his mouth. As his tongue slid against hers, she turned herself over to it, letting herself revel in the dreams of future victories and the celebrations that would follow.

My Review

A Groovy Kind of Love is a very sweet story. And while not my typical read, it is very well written. You really get to know Thaddeus and Spring; their journey to each other was sad in a way, neither really feeling truly happy or understood. Their courtship was a lovely in a humorous and awkward kind of way.

The first part of the book gives us the history of Thaddeus and Spring. It was kind of slow for me, to be honest, but it does give you a solid background of the characters. The second part of the book covers their courtship, which was told very differently than many of today’s books.

I would give this book 3.5 cups. This not to say that the book is bad, it just didn’t have me desperate to read or addicted. So, if you need a break from violence, sex, and alpha males, this book is a great choice.

She loves him but she believes their chance to be together has long passed.

When Kick finally stakes his claim, will Evie relent and give their love another go, or has Kick left it too long to go after the woman who has owned his heart forever?

EXCERPT

Kick grinned and came towards me, his hands reaching for the button on my jeans. I slapped his hand away. “No,” I said firmly, giving him the evil eye. “You’ve had your fill this morning and I’m all out of orgasms.”
He smirked. “Baby, you are never out of orgasms.”
I raised my brows, trying to look stern. “I am today.”
Crossing his arms over his chest, he said, “So you’ve got a dentist appointment and then what?”
“Then I’ve got work. Why?”
“I’m just trying to figure out how long until I can get my dick out again.” When I smirked, he added, “You don’t seem to realise just what you do to me, Evie.”
I put my hand on my hip, settling in to hear this. “Tell me, Kick, what do I do to you?”
He uncrossed his arms and took the few strides separating us. “You cause an insatiable fuckin’ need in me that I’ve never experienced before. Even if I fucked you all day long, I’d still never get enough.”
Oh god.
My core clenched.
Maybe I did have more orgasms in me today.
He traced my lips and then cupped my cheek before kissing me. “I’m taking you to your appointment and then to work, and then I’m picking you up from work and taking you back to my house. Today we play my way. With my toys,” he growled, and I felt his growl all the way through my body.
