I really liked the “who-done-it” aspects of this book. The suspense, the clues, the action – all well done. You don’t see the twist coming, either, and that is pretty cool. Some of it was a bit too easy, but actually made sense given that the story is in small town Maine. People would be more likely to divulge info in that kind of comfortable setting.
My issue is with the relationship between Oliver and Darling. For two people that ended “horribly” they seem to fall into step rather quickly. After 8 years. And then there was limited sexual tension; sometimes it seemed like they were stuck in a “friend-zone.” His need to protect her seemed, I dunno, forced, maybe? I’m not sure why, but I just couldn’t get with the program. And, when we finally find out what happened, the emotion just wasn’t quite there. And it could have been. Oh, it could have been beautifully broken, but it was just: “I’m sorry I did this.”
